The UP Studios and associated UP SPACE are initiatives of the Ultimo Project Incorporated, dating from 1985 and evolving out of the artists' space movements of the late nineteen seventies and early eighties. Initially a loose grouping of artists calling themselves the Kelly Street Collective from Kelly Street Ultimo, the group devised the title 'Ultimo Project' to identify a number of artists involved in a co-initiative with the Artworkers Union. Based in 'Ultimo,' their 'Project' (thus the name) was to investigate the possibilities for collectively purchasing property and developing that property into affordable housing for artists in Sydney. more....
